Here’s a mere smattering of some of the places, happenings, and activities you and the fam can enjoy sightseeing your way around Dallas as guests of ours at Hotel Crescent Court—for free!
Experience Ripley’s Oddest Talent Show
On Saturday, July 14th from 1 to 2 PM, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! presents a free, family-friendly sideshow featuring some unforgettable spectacles: part of the world-famous museum’s “99 Strange Days of Summer.” It’ll take place over at Ripley’s Grand Prairie location, an easy trip west from Hotel Crescent Court.
Visit the Crow Collection of Asian Art
This excellent museum—part of the renowned Dallas Arts District, and just blocks from Hotel Crescent Court—shows off the extensive collection of Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Korean, and Southeast Asian art from across the centuries that Trammell and Margaret Crow began assembling in the 1960s.
Admission to the Crow Collection of Asian Art—which is undergoing a significant expansion this autumn, and also changing its name to the Crow Museum of Asian Art—is free, though a small donation ($7 for adults, $5 for seniors) is suggested. The museum’s current exhibition is Earthly Splendor: Korean Ceramics from the Collection, which runs through September 9th.
Catch a Free Family Movie at West Village
Every third Wednesday between June and October, the West Village Movie Night treats visitors to free family movies under the stars between Mi Cocina and the Magnolia Theatre. The screenings generally begin at 8:30 PM, preceded at 7 PM by live music and DJ sets—a full evening of outdoor entertainment, and it won’t cost you one bit! (Though you certainly can patronize some of the adjoining restaurants and lounges, if you’re so inspired.)
Upcoming screenings include Julie & Julia on July 18th; Star Wars: The Force Awakens on August 15th; Mean Girls on September 19th; and The Greatest Showman on October 17th, which unlike the other begins at 7:30 PM.
Explore the Katy Trail
A beautiful day in Dallas calls for a jaunt on the Katy Trail, the paved multiuse recreational path that runs through the heart of the city from the West End to the Southern Methodist University campus. The route traces the historic Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (aka the “Katy”).
You can walk, jog, skate, or bike the Katy Trail: Whatever your preferred mode of human-powered locomotion, you’ll be getting some nice exercise, soaking up some lovely summer sunshine, and accessing a slew of great Dallas greenspaces and neighborhoods.
